Hello friends,

On July 9, my awesome friend, Kareem S, who has also been a guest speaker in the past spoke about Citizen Study to Understand Gaza Human Toll.

Agenda:

We’ve launched an independent citizen study to better understand the true human toll of the war in Gaza — based not on media or government numbers, but on the voices of those with direct ties to the region.

The early results are deeply moving and statistically significant.

If you or someone you know has family or friends in Gaza, your input matters.

Anti Corruption Exposure Website – Quick Survey: I am thinking of starting a new project to expose corruption around the world, specially in relation to Israel. Can you please take a quick look at the survey and answer the one required question and two optional questions. If you only do the required question, then it would only take you 30 to 60 seconds to do the survey. The second two questions are optional. If you are able to help (question 3), please be sure to share your email address. https://docs.google.com/forms/d/e/1FAIpQLSf48DFDkXeyYk4WPhEnr6emOsJy8EUe9xfyV3-RctEC_2A8FA/viewform?usp=header

Notes:

  • So far, have not been able to reach a lot of Gazans as they are literally fighting for survival. It is understandably traumatic for them
  • Most of the Gazans haven’t had time to mourn the loss of their loved ones because of their focus on basic survival
  • A lot of Gazans have illnesses, which are being left untreated during genocide
  • Lots of people who were healthy previously are also becoming unhealthy
  • It’s statistically improbable that Hamas Health ministry numbers are right – it’s a severe undercount
  • MSE method is an internationally recognized method of doing death and injury counts
  • Kareem also shared a shorter version as well
  • Questions
    • If one person says 10 out of 100 killed, another says 10 out of 100 killed, but lets say 5 were shared between the two, so the real number between the two is 15 out of 200 – how does MSE method deal with these nuances?
      • MSE method counts proportions, not total number
      • So in the above responses, both responses would count 10% murdered
      • More responses would make it more accurate
    • As the number of responses increases, so does your accuracy. Are you automating the analysis to be updated as you get more results?
      • Building analysis with every new response will update the analysis
    • Who else is working with you on this initiative – can we get someone to peer review this?
      • Kareem is open to collaborators
    • What kind of support do you need?
      • Support from Shannon to re-write the survey
      • Support from Academics
      • Support from anyone who can help with marketing to help the survey reach more Gazans
    • What is the number of people needed to make this effort statistically valid?
      • In order to get 95% confidence, we need at least 300 responses, 100 per survey, which would also help check the responses against each other – more the better
    • Suggestions from Shannon
      • Ask people how many family members they know that have been murdered, but not how many people they know
      • Questionnaire is too long – should be shortened
