On a seemingly ordinary day in 2025, an extraordinary conversation took place. This conversation, centred around Erika Kastel’s encounters with families in the besieged region of northern Gaza, sheds light on the reality of life under siege and the power of human connection.

The Power of Human Connection

At the core of Erika’s narrative is the importance of human connection. Her story unfolds from a chance encounter on TikTok with Hamza, a resident of Gaza. This interaction set the course for her becoming a lifeline for three families in Gaza, providing them with essential supplies and support.

“In a real sense all life is inter-related. All men are caught in an inescapable network of mutuality, tied in a single garment of destiny. Whatever affects one directly, affects all indirectly. I can never be what I ought to be until you are what you ought to be, and you can never be what you ought to be until I am what I ought to be…This is the inter-related structure of reality.” – Martin Luther King Jr.

The Reality of Life Under Siege

Life in northern Gaza is marked by deprivation and challenges that are hard for many of us to fathom. The region has been cut off from aid due to the dangers posed by Israeli bombing and snipers. Essential items such as food, medicine, and supplies are scarce and highly priced due to price gouging. A single egg can cost between $4-7, a can of sardines $10, and a blanket $30. The economic hardships have led to people resorting to burning clothes, scraps, diapers, and leaves for warmth.

The Role of Social Media

Without the power of social media, Erika’s encounter with the families of Gaza might not have been possible. Social media platforms like TikTok allowed Erika to connect with Hamza and subsequently, the families he knew. However, these platforms also have their limitations. Hamza’s posts began getting shadowbanned, cutting off a crucial line of communication. Similarly, when Erika’s LinkedIn account was restricted, she lost a vital source of fundraising and connection.

Continuing the Fight

Despite the challenges, Erika’s resolve to support the families in Gaza remains unbroken. She has raised $23,000, much of it her own money, to assist these families. Her tenacity is a testament to the power of human connection and empathy. She asserts, ‘The Palestinian families I am helping are MY FAMILY.’

As Erika continues her fight, she faces the constant threat of the occupation and the reality of losing friends and connections due to her advocacy. Yet, she is not deterred. As she states, ‘I am not going to stop talking the truth.’

Call to Action

It’s easy to feel helpless in the face of such overwhelming challenges. But as Erika’s story shows, there are tangible ways we can contribute. We can donate, share these stories, and use our platforms to raise awareness. Erika’s efforts remind us that every act of support, no matter how small, can make a difference.
