In a recent meeting held on May 8, 2024, we were privileged to hear from Dr. Musallam Abukhalil, a primary care physician working diligently in a school shelter in the Nusierat camp, central Gaza. This blog post aims to shed light on Dr. Musallam’s inspiring work, the challenges faced by the people in Gaza, and how the Dignity for Palestinians (D4P) initiative is making a difference.

Understanding the Ground Reality

Dr. Musallam’s firsthand account provided a grim, yet enlightening picture of the situation in Gaza. With hundreds of people sharing only three bathrooms, hygiene-related issues are a common sight. Necessities like diapers, wipes, and clothing are in short supply. Amidst this crisis, Dr. Musallam sees about 150 patients daily, working tirelessly to provide essential medical care.

He shared,

“Children in the Nusierat camp were running into mass headlice infections. We had to intervene by providing headlice medication.”

The D4P Initiative – Restoring Dignity, One Step at a Time

Understanding the dire need for aid, Dr. Musallam initiated Dignity for Palestinians (D4P). The aim is simple yet profound – to restore dignity to the Palestinians. The initiative mainly focuses on ensuring the provision of basic necessities and healthcare to the most vulnerable – the disabled, the elderly, and pregnant women.

One of their promising campaigns is Mountain of Mercy, which provides food to the vulnerable. At present, they supply vegetables to 200 families every ten days. While they may not be a large organization yet, their impact is significant.

Overcoming Obstacles and Seeking Collaborations

Dr. Musallam mentioned some significant challenges they face. For instance, the Kerem Salam/Shalom crossing, a significant avenue for fresh meat and vegetables, was closed on May 6-7. However, it is expected to reopen on May 9. This temporary closure underscores the importance of international collaborations to ensure a steady supply of essential goods.

On a positive note, the private sector has been able to procure goods like fresh meat and vegetables, and the initiative pays these local suppliers, thereby supporting the local economy as well.

Ensuring Transparency and Accountability

D4P understands the importance of accountability and transparency. The funds raised through GoFundMe are transferred to Palestine Islamic Bank (PIB) in Ramallah, with minimal transfer fees. Suppliers are paid directly through an app, which dramatically reduces transfer fees.

Call to Action: Be a Part of the Change

Seeing the impact and the potential of D4P, we invite you to join us in supporting this initiative. Whether it’s by becoming a fundraising ambassador, a project sponsor, or simply spreading the word, your contribution can help bring dignity and hope to the people of Gaza.
